Blue vitriol (CuSO4) is my favorite kind. Oil of Vitriol (H2SO4) is much too nasty, though I always wanted to name a literary villain The Earl of Vitriol.
I love the phrase "harbinger of doom." Especially when you add about ten O's to the "doom" and say it in a finger-wriggling spooky voice.
"Crinoline" makes me think of "bombazine," which is one of my favourite words to say. Though I don't think that crinolines were generally made from bombazine, so it's rather a faulty association.
